INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE on FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS

Kyiv, August 22 - 26, 2001

SECOND ANNOUNCEMENT

As it has been announced, the Institute of Mathematics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Mathematical Society are organizing an International Conference on Functional Analysis. The conference will be held on August 22-26, 2001, in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine.

The contribution of Ukrainian scientists in the development of mathematics is well-known. In particular, significant schools of functional analysis were founded by S. Banach in Lviv (after 1939), M. G. Krein in Odessa, N. I. Akhiezer in Kharkiv.

This conference is the third international meeting in functional analysis held in Ukraine, after the International Conference Dedicated to 100th Birthday of S. Banach (Lviv, 1992) and Mark Krein International Conference "Operator Theory and Applications" (Kyiv-Odessa, 1997). It is a satellite conference of the Ukrainian Congress of Mathematics (Kyiv, 2001) dedicated to the 200th birthday of M. V. Ostrogradsky whose work has had a considerable impact upon the development of mathematics as a whole.

Kyiv is one of the oldest, largest, and most beautiful cities in the world. It lies on the banks of the charming Dnieper river, with its numerous branches, islands and beaches, amidst picturesque parks, hills, and vallleys. The architectural heritage of Kyiv goes back to 11th century. Kyiv is a scientific and cultural center of Ukraine, with a number of universities, museums, and theatres.
