Topological Mass Generation in Four Dimensions

It is observed that the two dimensional Schwinger mechanism for mass generation in a gauge theory can be formulated entirely in topological terms, making use of the Chern-Pontryagin and Chern-Simons enbtities. This observation allows promoting the mechanism to four dimension, where the analogous, four-dimensional entities effect an analogous mass generation.
